Early Years

Category: Phase of Education. Early Years settings include private and voluntary day nurseries, pre-schools, playgroups, child minding networks, portage services and Local Authority day nurseries.

EiC Action Zones

For historical reference only: EIC Action Zones were a key strand of the Excellence in Cities (EiC) initiative. They provide additional support to groups of schools within an EiC area to overcome local barriers to achievement and raise standards of education at each participating school.

European Schools

Category: Type of Establishment. European Schools exist principally to provide free education for the children of employees of European Union institutions. Where places are available, children from other backgrounds are admitted on payment of fees.

Excellence in Cities

For Historical Purposes: Excellence in Cities was a programme designed to remedy successive failures in city schools where standards have been too low for too long. It worked through local partnerships between LAs and schools focusing on the needs and aspirations of individual pupils and their parents. It involved 58 authorities in the main programme as well as further areas where Excellence Clusters have been established.
